Who was . . . Pietro d'Abano?

Pietro d'Abano (c.1250-1317) was an Italian who studied philosophy, astrology and medicine in Paris before opening a practice in Padua. Described as 'a great master', he was accused by the Inquisition of 'using magic,' but was acquitted. After his death the Inquisition re-tried him, found him guilty, and ordered his body to be exhumed and burned. But his friends got there first, and carried the body off to safe burial  elsewhere.
