Curious example tonight of unconscious and
honest sexuality by a decent woman. A Scotchwoman (age about 45) sitting by the
fire in the lounge describing to another woman her sensations on seeing a
regiment of Highlanders (with music) pass along Princes Street, Edinburgh. ‘I
couldn’t bear to look at them – made me cry – my heart was so full. Nothing
moves me so much as a regiment of Highlanders. Their costume . . . and so tall
. . . such fine men . . . such white skins . . . But I shouldn’t like to be in
the same room with them. I shouldn’t like to know them.’ She was quite unaware that phrase after
phrase which she used was an expression of sexual feeling.
